5. Istvan KOVACS(KOVACH)

BACKGROUND: Istvan (his Hungarian name) left Hungary thru Bremen, Germany on 13 Feb 1909 and arrived in New York, N.Y. on 27 Feb 1909 at Ellis Island. He arrived on the ship "Main". He left Julianna & daughter Anna in Hungary. They arrived later on 3 Dec 1909 on the RMS Carpathia, which was the same ship that picked up the 705 survivors from the sinking of theTitanic on 15 Apr 1912. Also the RMS Carpathia was sunk off the coast of Ireland by the German SM U-55 on July 17, 1918, five lives where lost.


The family lived on 2937 Lorain Ave in Cleveland, Cuyahoga, Ohio. Moved to 2196 W. 28th Street. Sold that house. And then lived on the corner of 54th St and Bridge Ave. (1857 W. 54th St). It was a two family house with the shoe repair shop in the southwest corner of the house.
His Petitioned for Naturalization papers (#20812) was 5 Nov 1925 as Steven Kovacs, 2221326-Vol.84, pg.162, Court of Common Pleas, Cuyahoga County, Cleveland, Ohio, Witnesses where George J.W. Mathews of 5301 Bridge Ave. Thomas Urbansky of 1284 W. 108 St.. After he received his U.S. citizen papers in 1925, he changed the spelling of his surname from Kovacs to Kovach (abt 1927). His son Stephen was known as Kovach.

OCCUPATION: Cobbler (made & repaired shoes). Learned the trade in Hungary.
His cobblers tools maybe in a museum in Cleveland, Cuyahoga, Ohio.

MILITARY: In Hungary, 18 year old men were required to serve in the military for 3 years.

INTERESTS: Movies, pencil sketching.

MEDICAL: Mom said that grandpa had half of a foot missing. He stuffed the full size shoe with something to make it appear normal. He may have walked with a slight limp, but no one noticed. Mom doesn't know how he happened to lose part of his foot.
He died of prostrate cancer.

OBITUARY IN NEWSPAPER: "Cleveland Press", Kovach, Steve, beloved husband of Julia, father of Anna Kreiner, Stephen Jr., and grandfather, late residence 1857 W. 54 St., friends may call at Weber & Hoesch Funeral Home, 6512 Franklin Blvd., where services will be held Sat., July 12 at 2 p. m. Robert L. Kacirck, funeral director.

BURIAL: He was cremated. Location of his ashes is unknown. His wife, Julianna, would not talk about it.
Update: He was buried at West Park Cemetery, Cleveland, Cuyahoga, Ohio.

Kovach, Steve ....... 1930 Census film #2341501. He felt that people did not pronounce his name correctly so he dropped the "s" and changed it to "h". As a result, Anna's Surname is Kovacs and Uncle Steve's, her brother, surname is Kovach.

COMMENTS:
Need to check his military records in Hungary.
Ck on when he changed his name. Did he change his name legally? It was between 1925 - 27.
Kovacs was also found in the 1920 Census Index microfilm #1821367, E.D. 60, Sheet 9 Line 21.????

Family may have moved before first Istvan was born (1871). Will need to do more research in Death Records.


Julianna ASZTALOS

BACKGROUND: Julianna was one of three surviving out of maybe a total of 16 siblings. She was the fourth born.
Julia and daughter Anna arrived in the U.S.A. on 3 Dec 1909. The ship "Carpathia" arrived on 3 Dec 1909 from the Port of Fiume, Carnaro, Triest, Austria per Passenger List in film #1400066. Julia was 26 years old.

They first lived on 2937 Lorain Ave in Cleveland, Cuyahoga, Ohio. Then moved to 26th St. (for addtional locations, see Istvan Kovacs). They sold that house and moved to W 54th & Bridge Ave. It was a two family house with a shoe repair shop in the southwest corner of the building.

Julianna was christened in Hungary. Julianna had a brother Gabor and a sister Maria. They both came to the USA at a later date.

OCCUPATION: Housewife. Expert seamstress & installed lining in fur coats, etc.

EDUCATION: Went to Seamstres & Sewing school in Europe and received a "book" or diploma.

INTERESTS: Cooking, baking, sewing.

MEDICAL: Cerebral hemorrhage due to hypertension cardiovascular disease plus pneumonia.

DEATH: Certificate: Reg. Dist. No. 1809, Primary Reg. Dist. No. 1807. Registrar's No. 463.
Died in the Broadview Nursing Home, Parma, Cuyahoga, Ohio, of Cerebral Hemorrhage & Hypertensive Cardiovascular on 15 May 1969 at the age of 85.

OBITUARY IN NEWSPAPER: "Plain Dealer", Julia Kovach (nee Asztalos), late residence, 5306 Bridge Ave., devoted wife of the late Steve, beloved mother of Anna Kreiner of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. and the late Steve, grandmother and great-grandmother. Friends received at The Louis A. Bodnar & Son Funeral Chapel, 3929 Lorain Ave., where services will be held Saturday, May 17 at 1 p.m. Interment Riverside Cemetery.
